It's a big Friday Night in Allen. The Americans are playing their home opener and the Eagles are on the road to play Flower Mound Marcus.
It's a tough decision, but it looks like I'll be at my daughter's birthday party. (I said it was a tough decision. I didn't say it was My decision to make.)

Dairy Queen is back in town!
I took Whit to the new Dairy Queen yesterday. It's a bit fancier than most Dairy Queens. Four Flat Screen TVs, and they're wasting them on CNN? Seriously, who watches that anymore?
Restaurant TV's are for sports. CNN makes me feel like I'm in an airport.

No more "Home of the 12th Man"?
I heard a rumor that once Texas A&M changes conferences, they're going to change their motto to
"Home of the SECth Man".
There's probably nothing to it, though.

Eagles Keep Winning
After the Eagle beat Longview last week, I'm beginning to get my hopes up for another long playoff run.

Are you ready for some Football?
I missed the Allen American's Open House so I could go see the Eagles' home opener.
Well, technically, they were the home team, but they played at SMU. It was a nice field, Allen beat Cedar Hill 28-13. It should be a good year for the Eagles. They're a fun team to watch.

The Great Wall of Allen
If you've driven through Allen recently, you've probably noticed it. The huge fence behind SuperTarget and Dick's.
At first, I just thought it was a run-of-the-mill 2 story driving range, but this is much cooler than that.
It's a Top Golf, where they put a tracking device in every golf ball and keep track of how you're driving. You can compete with your friends or just try for a high score.
They've also got a restaurant, but I haven't heard much about it. The wait for Golf is getting a little less imposing, but it's still pretty full on the weekends.
It almost makes me wish I was a golfer.

It's beginning to look like a Stadium
Some people think the big number with the Stadium is $60 million, but the number I like is 18,500.
That's how many people it will hold. I can't wait to be able to go to a home football game and actually find a seat. I think it's tied for the 5th largest High School stadium in the Texas, but the others are all shared by multiple teams.
The Stadium is nice, but the real story should be the Arts Wing that they're building at the High School. It will have an auditorium which can be used for guest speakers in combined classrooms, and a Restaurant for use by the culinary classes.

Traffic Report
If you're driving down Cedar between Main Street and Exchange in Allen, expect slow traffic.
There's not a Lot of traffic. It's just that everyone is stopping to look at the new Wave Park which is finally beginning to look like a wave park.

They say summer's almost over. I'm not really sure.
August 22 is the first day of school, which means that next week will be full of Meet the Teacher nights for the various schools. Be sure to check your school's web site for the time and date.
The beginning of school and football are supposed to mark the end of summer. Somehow, I doubt the temperature will co-operate this year.
I used to have an "I survived the 1980 Texas Heat Wave" t-shirt (along with a few other t-shirts). I'm sure it's still in storage somewhere. I hope we don't break the record this year or I'll have to get another shirt.
Anyway, good luck to all the parents and students for another school year.

What's Your Favorite Game?
I got to go to a preview of the new Cabela's recently. It's a great store. I knowit's kinda creepy, but what I really though was impressive was the taxidermy.
Here's a few pictures I took at the preview
I think this bear is hunting a deer, but there is an alternate interpretation.
I call this one "Impala Impaled".

Just when you think the Carnivore always wins, I like to call this one "Grazer's Revenge".
After failing to see a moose on my recent trip to Colorado, I was thrilled to find one right here in Allen.

I wonder if these cats sparkle in the daylight.

Polar bears are always a popular game, but if you really want to impress people, tell them you took it down with a handgun on a magic island in the South Pacific.
